The Social Media Modeler Myth | Boomer Diorama ~ # 268
Social Media is the perfect alter ego for every individual. It rarely tells the true story and often times perpetuates the mythical persona. In reality, we are all very similar and share the same tragedy and bliss if we live long enough.

Modeling a New Quaking Aspen Tree with Inspired Passion - June 2024 | Boomer Diorama ~ # 261

Art is imagination applied with skill. Therefore, I always challenge myself regardless to increase my skill level. It also inspires even more passion when I make a decision to do it. Therefore, passion embraces new challenges. One of the greatest challenges is to model a specific tree species where it actually looks authentic. In this case I show how I conceive, model and paint a summer aspen t...

HO Scale (SRY Rail Link) Locomotive (wet-on-wet) Paint - Weathering Tip | Boomer Diorama ~ # 240
I don't do much photography professionally anymore, but I've got one photo on my page somewhere that shows the setup to photograph "artaments," which were basically little bits of art that were entended to be Christmas tree ornaments. The artaments were eventually auctioned off to benefit something, but I photographed them in exchange for some publicity. I had about 3 different lights for the bulk of the shots, plus a background, and put all of them on a pedestal. Then I had another rod going over the top to show how they were suspended. The pictures were clean, for the auctions, but the shot showing my setup was so chaotic. Still, it really bugs me when I hear somebody taking 5 shots of everything they do at an event or at a wedding. You're just making more work for yourself. Get better and take one shot, maybe two. You can learn what you're looking for instead of hoping you'll get something good. I definitely know what you mean by the 2 shots in 36. I've heard something similar with medium format film and it's 12-15 shots per roll, and now how people have thousands of photos on a single card. I actually also used to shoot 4x5 film. It's not fun to set up a camera and focus unless you know the shot is good, but still...
👍
I can almost smell the sea water and diesel fuel from the ferry.... looking good :)
😊 Thank you John. Cheers.
Just wanted to say it's been a joy watching your videos over the past couple of days, over 45 years of making models and miniatures and still learning new things, thank you
Wow, thank you!
@@boomerdiorama You're welcome, I might have laughed a bit too much at the Nutmeg jar, lol
Looking forward to this series
Cheers.
Boomer, so very true words. I love the people who show you their mistakes, and then how to overcome, it proves that they are human too, and makes the viewing enjoyable. We have all had days when the glue sticks to our fingers, or the paint doesn't dry, or the colur dries differently to what you expected. Just pick yourself up, and carry on. Cheers, and thank you for the sage words, keep safe, Michael
Yes indeed. In fact the more you model the more it happens. ;-)
Everything is looking great, thus far. Can’t wait to see the ferry build, it’s gonna be great, I’m sure. I know you said or at least I thought you said, at times you need to put projects off to the side and I believe that’s what you did with the tug? (Or maybe it’s done? LOL). That has been a very cool build as well and the detailing that you’ve done on it is amazing. They could be like two ships passing in the night, again LOL Thank you soooo much for sharing all of these great builds with us. Ron
The Tug is still in the rather large lengthy schedule. ;-)
"Sort of in your blood" (21:51)? Good Gawd O'mighty, boy; it IS your blood. You beat all I have ever seen. You are so good that it isn't even humanly possible to be that good.......... As for the warehouse that nobody knows what its use was (14:55), well, I hate to have to be the one to tell you this, but it was used to deliver atomic nuclear waste, which was then transferred into caskets at the warehouse and buried at the local cemetery under false names using false death certificates on tombstones. That proved to be much cheaper than dealing with it the way the governmental environmental agencies required it be treated. (No, I'm not serious.) Give my best to Dusty. If you ever come down to Florida, I'd love to meet you. "Dangerous" (a fun-loving joker)
Lol . . . makes one wonder what goes on for sure. Probably worse than we can imagine. ;-)
Awesome commentary as always. Your passion and love for the hobby is truly admirable. I love it when you do these "revisit" types of videos. Section one seems like it was built so long ago, yet it feels like it was just yesterday you built the barge slip. Absolutely gorgeous layout. Watching your videos these past 3 years has taught me so much about the "art" of the hobby itself. I cannot thank you enough for sharing your wisdom, experience, and commentary through these videos. CHEERS!
I appreciate that. Thanks for taking the time to write down your thoughts and compliments. Cheers ~ Boomer. ;-)
The Cat is out of scale for the layout. Awesome layout and nice compromise on the size of the industry.
Thank you very much!
Loving this series so far, was familiar with some of the products you are using as a huge bug gear of mine is Art derived Hobby Products sold with a huge mark up! But you've shown me some stuff I wasn't aware of, thanks. I think we are of a similar mind set as we are about the same age (April '61). I'm really loving how you are modelling the water, it's fantastic, I've used resins in the past and absolutely hate them. I was thinking of trying water clear silicone, but not any longer Can't wait to make my way through more of your content cheers Mick

Do these guys every operate on Saturdays?
Like the garbage truck beeping as he backs up after emptying your trash bin. Thanks Boomer 😊😊
No problem 👍
Smart dog you said ? I had a mix husky, escape queen she was. Left her inside CN caboose with window door open. When i return she was outside. She climb conductor seat, walk on its desk and pass through the window opening. Next day i left but with close window. Outside again ! While standing and scratching the doir, she hit the locking pin, put it down, then succeed in turning stiff T door knob and pull open the door. She could di that in matter of seconds. So i had no choice than to chain the door from outside. A 60 pounds dog passing through a 6 or 8 " opening window. Amazing. On a sad note, Noirot my oldest cat passed away on july 3rd. He was 21 years 10 months and 6 days. Or 104 years in human counting. Being born home, it´s quite a long odyssey partner that is gone. Since Boomer lost a 1 year cat with renal issue, Noirot lived many years with one too. I gave him renal food + medications for stimuling pooping (no fiber in its food). Once it get clogged and just seeing the vet finger emptying.....poor cat. Boomer learned to avoid trackage too close from fascia and risk of fall. Same for me. House is about 68 meters or more than 200 feet from tracks. Just in case autoracks decide to not follow the rails.... To our south of the border friends, happy 4th of july.
Same to you and thanks for sharing!
The crucial point, I believe, is that if you want to show something "good" then you need to practice, practice, practice. Not only the modelling aspect, but also the filming aspect. But the best thing that I have found with social media, especially the likes of RUclips, is when mistakes are also shown, as you have in a number of clips, and how you corrected the problem. It is those types of video that really help others. Unfortunately, not many think this way.
. . . and the real challenge is buying the time to not only produce, edit and publish video but to actually build the model and maintain fresh channel content as well. Thanks for sharing! Cheers ~ Boomer.
Loved your comment about social media 😂
Yes Paul. There is popular RUclips culture channels and niche channels. This channel is not popular youtube culture. ;-)
the channels I like the best show mistakes being made. It helps to know the people I feel are really advanced still make mistakes, and it encourages me to keep trying new things and challenging myself with this hobby. Really love your channel and philosophy!
Great to hear!
I remember putting a catalogue together in 1990 for jewelry items I was manufacturing. The photography entailed tripods, lighting, light boxes, light meters, developing, printing, etc etc etc...Everything that took me months to complete I could accomplish today on my smartphone in a matter of days. I'm glad I learned the basics the hard way.
Lol . . . Seems unfair eh . . . ;-)
In high school, I took photos for the yearbook. Developed the black&white film. Then printed prints. I'd taken pictures of my childhood layout. Nothing really turned out in the cellar😂
I have some cool pics I took with a view camera (4" x 6" negatives) back in the day and the sharpness was out of this world. Even better than digital cameras.
You got to practice.
😁👍
Sometimes I take 10 photos and none of them are good. It's like fishing. Sometimes they just ain't biting. Other days I take 4, and 3 are good. We're having fish for supper!
So true!
Do you have a video from start to where you are now?
ruclips.net/video/5tVBtTbr1mM/видео.html
Hope you never get the urge to build a new layout I think nothing can top river road in such a small space 😊
Me neither. I still feel like I have only started on this layout. Only been three years and there is so much story to build. Wait until you see the Ferry . . . soon. ;-)
Boomer, let me reassure you. I practice. I practice a lot.....as a viewer 😅😅😅😊
Perfect!
Perfectly stated Booker…😎
That is scary . . . lol. ;-)
@@boomerdiorama Boom😢…sorry for the misspelling… I just got off the operating table for my triple bypass…so I was a bit shaky…
Amazing, ..I’m just trying to do something similar as you have really made me fall in love with modelling, I’m a boomer to but never to late to learn
Thanks for sharing! Go for it! It's never too late to pick up the hobby and grow exponentially with it. Cheers ~ Boomer.
We show it all! 🤣 Like you said, everyone has successes and failures but on social media we tend to only see the best from most people.
. . . or the finish. Rarely the start or midterm. ;-)
True, but practice improves your skills. Digital photography democratized itself. One can learn composition, framing, color adjustment, lighting and more with their phone. Given a good camera and the right lens for the application, I would expect the results from the average modeler nowadays to be much better than 20 years ago. Part of my job used to be photographing with film the projects my company completed. Good video, good for thought. Thanks, Rob
Camera Phones don't teach much because they are always on auto. You never learn anything on auto. Phones are painful to go into auto mode compared to a digital SLR in my experience. Cheers and thanks for sharing. ;-)
Lookin' SWEET.
Thank you. It seems to run good as well.
Social media has been a great tool for me, it’s been great to connect with others builders. I have the best luck with RUclips and Instagram. Seems that Facebook brings out all the “you should do this” comment people…lol. I have been a lone wolf with this hobby for about 12 years now, it’s nice to build a connection with a few builders. As for what I post on social, it’s definitely showing “my journey”. I really enjoy to look back on old post and see how I did stuff in the past, but with some cringe on experiments that now have made me better. 😊 Any who, great topic… good reminder for everyone to build and push their limits creatively. By the way, if you ever have a slow week for content… I would love to see just trains running on the layout, helps me soak up all the awesome scenery you have done. Cheers! 🐈⬛
I do plan to run trains - but more so down the road. I have goals I need to meet first, but your comments are duly noted! Thanks for sharing. Cheers ~ Boomer.
👍👍👍
Cheers!
You’re no god. But your work is one heck of an inspiration. Just hand laid my first section of track last week. Not much, but I’ve started and I’m loving the learning curve.
Sounds awesome. I love the perpetual learning curve. ;-)
